If you’ve read our article about the Sartorial shops in Hong Kong earlier (the article was in Thai language at the moment), one of our recommendations is ‘Prologue’ with the finest suit based on Italian style by revealing the stylishness of both Florentine and Neapolitan into their unique House Cut. MenDetails decided to commission their signature house cut brown suit and this is Prologue suit review that we would like to introduce to everyone.
‘Prologue’ Semi-Bespoke method
Semi-Bespoke may not be a very familiar word since most suit shops have tended to do an MTM (Made to Measure), having a master pattern, measuring customers’ body and then adjust the size from that master pattern to cut the suit. But for Prologue, their so-called “Semi-Bespoke” process will enhance more attention to the slightest details of the customer’s aesthetic consisting of the uneven shoulder height or the twisted legs, to name a few. The Prologue’s ability to notice those aesthetic points is very important and what makes it different from the normal Made to Measure program.
While more attention in the details is a huge advantage, it also can be a problem especially if you may not have enough time or chances for several fittings and adjustments or ordering from abroad (Like we are doing from Thailand). What Prologue suggested to us is to deliver our well-fitted suit to the shop beforehand. After that, the shop will start working right away and make the first pattern being ready for fitting on the day we arrived in Hong Kong.
However, we would like to remark this is not the best way. What we strongly suggest is to have sufficient time for fitting the suit at the shop as much as possible, for example, 2 fittings within 4 weeks. Therefore, it would be the best option for you if you had a trip to Hong Kong regularly. However, if that wasn’t the case, one fitting at the shop and waiting for your suit at home would be a “moderate” option you may select.
Selecting the fabric
The suit color we selected is different from the basic colors such as navy blue or charcoal grey that everyone might be familiar with. This Chocolate Brown fabric from Holland & Sherry “Crispaire” 100% worsted wool is considered high quality with a lightweight, high twist breathable texture and hard to form creases. It is suitable for the hot climate in Thailand and the reason we select a dark brown colour because it pairs really well with all the shades of blue, another favorite colour of ours
After the fabric selection comes a fitting sseion. The shop will let us try on some samples they made and adjust those small details to get to the well-fitted suit. The most impressive remark is the detail of trousers because our legs are slightly twisted and folded inward a little. We have no idea that we have those issues with our legs, nevertheless, they are noticed and remarked quickly by a well-trained tailor at Prologue as soon as we tried on the trousers.
After the fitting and adjustment, the shop will take about 1-2 months to cut the suit for us. Normally there should be a second fitting again to adjust any tiny details or errors that may occur. However, we are not able to come back to Hong Kong that often. Therefore, Prologue finished our suit right away according to the first fitting and deliver to us immediately to Thailand. It is quite fast enough, takes about 5 days from Hong Kong to reach us.
Prologue Suit Review
A great suit with some comments
‘Prologue House Style’ consisting of Full-Canvas, Pick Stitching, 4 inches of Notch Lapel, 3 Roll 2 and Jetted Pockets which are excellently designed. Especially the distinctive and unique collar roll and gorgeous extended shoulder without any thick shoulder pads. But because our left shoulder is slightly lower than the right, therefore, Prologue insert thin pad to the left shoulder to make both shoulders height even, which is an example of what Semi-Bespoke from Prologue can make a more specific fit for you.
The most extraordinary piece is trousers. We think that Prologue’s trousers cut is very neat and creates an almost perfect fine line from waist to cuff. Also, beautiful details including Double Pleated, High Waisted, and Extended Front Button along with Side Adjusters are very well tailored
However, there are a few acceptable compromising details due to the fact that we did not have the second fitting with Prologue. The right shoulder has some creases. and there are several creases at the back below the collar. The compromises are very minor and very easy to fix if you have the opportunity to visit them again
Another favorite thing is a fine canvas in the full-floating-canvassed jacket construction. When we are wearing it, we feel the jacket is embracing our body, very well-fitted and still has room for comfortable movement. The more often you wear it, the suit will become even more fit with your body with a full floating canvas as one of the most important symbols of the high-quality suit.
In our Prologue suit review and opinion, the suit is influenced by both Neapolitan and Florentine. And dark brown is versatile enough for semi-formal business events or even a smart dressed up parties. You can separate this brown jacket and pair it with dark blue jeans or navy dress trousers. While the brown trousers also can go well with a white OCBD shirt or light blue denim shirt for your office hours or casual weekend.
For those who are reading our Prologue suit review and would like to try cutting a suit with them, you can contact Prologue in Hong Kong directly. The suit price starts at 7,500 HKD or 30,000 baht, which is a reasonable price compared to the quality and all the details that we have described. Our suggestion is to have a second fitting with Prologue that will make your suit closer to perfection. MenDetails believe that the Prologue’s suit will open your sartorial world and let you know how a high-quality suit looks like with a more reasonable price at the identical level of quality.
